a blueprint for quitting tobacco

A brand-new year brings many New Year’s resolutions. Quitting cigarette smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. If you are one of the millions of people in Pan America who smoke, you will immediately improve your health when you stop.

The combined benefits of quitting certainly outweigh any temporary relief and enjoyment a smoker gets when lighting up a cigarette. Research has shown that quitting smoking has immediate as well as long-term health benefits, reducing risks for diseases caused by smoking and improving overall health in general. Every smoker experiences a different journey before successfully quitting.

There are several ways to quit smoking, including counselling, using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), electronic cigarettes, snus or oral nicotine products, taking prescription medicines, and getting professional support. Countries within Pan America can borrow a leaf from the many countries worldwide that have successfully reduced the prevalence of cigarette smoking.

Sweden, which is on course to drop below a 5% tobacco smoking prevalence, is a lesson that can inspire countries within Pan America for this coming year. The country has attained the lowest rate of smoking in the European Union, and is close to declaring itself ‘smoke-free’. The recent progress in the fight against smoking in Sweden has been significantly accelerated by the introduction of innovative, smoke-free nicotine-based alternative products.

The Swedish model, underscored by its impressive results, provides valuable lessons for Pan America on embracing harm reduction and innovative solutions for cessation. As we celebrate Sweden’s accomplishments, we should be motivated to emulate its success this coming year by fostering an environment where alternative products can flourish, helping millions of smokers in Pan America break free from the grip of tobacco smoking.

Becoming smoke-free in 2024 has never been more achievable and the start of a positive journey that has immediate and long-term health benefits. Sweden’s journey is a guiding light on the path to making it a reality for all in Pan America. Happy New Year!
