Heated Tobacco Products (Heat not Burn, THP)

What are heated tobacco products?

Heated tobacco products consist of a device and generally disposable sticks containing tobacco. They are heated inside the device, and discarded after use.

Heated tobacco products heat actual tobacco, (but do not burn leaves) to produce an inhalable vapour.

These products aim to mimic the experience of smoking, but with much lower risk.

As there is no burning or combustion involved, heated tobacco products produce no ash, smoke, or tar.

Most tobacco-heated products heat the pods up to 400°C, far lower than conventional cigarettes.

By not burning tobacco, heated tobacco products produce significantly less carbon monoxide (CO) and other harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes.

Helping Smokers Quit

THP use in Japan has been correlated with a massive drop in smoking rates

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health

Between 2015 and 2019, total cigarette sales in Japan dropped by 34 percent. THP was introduced in Japan in 2015

THP Science:

Second hand aerosols from THP have been shown to be three orders of magnitude lower than that for cigarettes.

Tomoyasu Hirano, National Cancer Center, Japan

The use of Tobacco Heated Products could lead to a significant reduction in exposure to harmful substances compared to combusted cigarettes..

Yukio Akiyama, Toxicology Reports

Biomarkers in studies have shown potential for health improvement compared to smoking for consumers of THP.

Yukio Akiyama, Toxicology Reports

Smokers who switch entirely to the use of this THP, are reasonably likely to reduce disease risks compared to those continuing to smoke.

Nathan Gale, Industry Researcher

Carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides are 97-99% lower in the aerosol of THP compared to mainstream cigarette smoke.
